Anti-MFA: A Writing Workshop for the Rest of Us

Anti-MFA: A Writing Workshop for the Rest of Us

Why should the University get to monopolize knowledge, community, and resources? Why should graduate students and professors have all the fun? If we’re going to become serious writers—if we’re going to succeed—we need to come together on a regular basis to read, discuss, and advance our work. Think of this as a step up from a critique group—something with a bit more commitment, consistency, and intention. Each month, writers will submit work for feedback along with some published work for us to read and discuss. Then, each participant will prepare in whatever way they have the desire or capacity for—reading ahead of time, leaving comments, writing a letter, or just showing up the day of. Whatever we end up doing, the point here is to support each other as a community of writers, and what that support looks like is entirely up to you.

Please note: while this workshop is poetry focused, all genres are welcome. The more the merrier. You also do not have to be a writer or share your own work to participate. Depending on how many people participate, there may not be enough time for everyone to receive feedback. Schedules will be determined from meeting to meeting. Priority will be given to folks who have not received feedback at a previous meeting. If there are a lot of us, we may end up splitting into smaller groups. We’ll just have to see.

If you’re interested in participating, email [email protected] or just show up.
