Museum Exhibition | Kimono Matters: Materiality and Making
Kimono Matters: Materiality and Making is a museum exhibition exploring the kimono as an iconic Japanese garment worn across genders and ages. It focuses on why the kimono still matters today and how its materials and construction have influenced fashion history. The exhibition takes place at the Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising, 216 E. Lake St., Fort Collins, CO 80524. Visit Tuesday–Friday from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. It’s ideal for museumgoers, fashion and design enthusiasts, and anyone curious about Japanese cultural dress and textile craftsmanship. What makes it special is its deep dive into “materiality”—how fabric, making, and physical details shape cultural meaning and style legacy. Note: the museum is closed during CSU spring, fall, and winter breaks and on holidays. Check avenir.colostate.edu for the latest closure updates before you go.
