Definition:
Provide reference assistance to customers in the adult, children's and teen, computer,
audio/visual, or periodicals services areas, and provide administrative and/or technical tasks in
support of Library functions including cataloging, acquisitions, inspections of incoming
materials, circulation, or computer and software maintenance.
Principal Duties:
• Assist library patrons at public desks in assigned department; interviews patrons by
telephone or electronic media (e.g. email, chat, text or instant messaging) or in person
responding to service requests.
• Locate information in assigned area using electronic databases and resources, print
library materials, the Internet, or other tools.
• Recommend resources for purposes of education, information, or recreational reading.
• Accompany patrons to the appropriate resources and instruct / assist patrons in the use
of library resources both printed and computer based.
• Assist patrons with their devices and technology including tablets, smart phones, laptops
and personal computers for the purposes of accessing electronic library materials.
• Provide software/hardware instruction and support to users with a wide variety of
computer skill levels.
• Oversee the work and training of lower-level staff and volunteers in area of assignment
including assigning routine duties, providing instruction, and assisting in the Library's
training process.
• Provide general administrative and technical support related to various Library functions
and customer services.
• Catalog library print and non-print materials. Create and update bibliographic records.
Stay abreast of changes in Library of Congress subject headings and Dewey system
classification numbers.
• Provide customer assistance at the Circulation desk, performing duties of the Library
Assistants. Identify overdue materials, process customer notices, and collect and record
fines.
Depending upon assignment, may perform these Essential Duties:
• Receive and inspect incoming materials, label/barcode, jacket, store, and distribute.
• Perform administrative support tasks in the ordering, receiving, and processing of
invoices for collections acquisitions.
• Process inter library loan requests of print and no-print materials. Conduct database
searches to verify information, locate lending libraries, and make online loan requests.
• Organize and maintain special indexes and vertical files. Obtain and update materials as
needed.
• Maintain the periodical's collection including participating in selection, receiving,
rotating, mending, and physical storage of materials.
• Record and compile Interlibrary Loan statistics.
• Perform word processing, data entry, or other routine administrative tasks in support of
library divisions.
• Assist in the processing of new library materials, enter data related to the ordering,
receiving and invoicing of new library materials.
• Maintain the periodicals collection including receiving new issues, rotating, mending and
physical storage of materials.
Working Environment:
Work is done in a standard library environment, which includes exposure to dust. Work requires
standing, walking, bending and stooping, use of hands to make repetitive grasping motions,
light lifting of up to 15 pounds, pushing and pulling of book carts, and sufficient vision to clearly
read book labels. May require climbing at least two steps on a ladder or step stool and reaching
above shoulder level. Work requires repetitive motion to enter data on keyboard. Schedule
requires availability on weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Work frequently involves
confidentiality, reasoning, problem solving, and attention to detail.
Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate's Degree from an
accredited college or university and two or more years of clerical and/or technical experience in
a public library or area related to specific assignment. Special Qualifications: Performance at
this level requires advanced customer service skills, knowledge of library operations, and
sufficient knowledge to provide competent reference assistance. Bilingual (English/Spanish)
intermediate proficiency preferred.
