Hey Boulder! šŸŒž

We’re deep in peak leaf-peeping season, and there’s no better place to hike it all in than Hessie Trailhead. Whether you’re craving a quick lake loop or a full-day alpine adventure, this is one of Boulder County’s most iconic fall escapes. Just don’t forget—parking’s tricky, and the shuttle shuts down soon!

🄾 Boulder’s Busiest Backdoor to the Wilderness

If you’ve ever typed ā€œbest hikes near Boulderā€ into Google, chances are you’ve been pointed to Hessie Trailhead. Tucked just past the tiny town of Eldora, this trailhead is your golden gateway to the Indian Peaks Wilderness—home to alpine lakes, fiery aspens, and some of the Front Range’s most jaw-dropping fall hikes. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, summiting peaks, or just in it for the leaf peeping, Hessie has something for everyone.

From here, you can trek to Lost Lake (a mellow 4.2-mile round trip), King Lake (a hearty 12-miler), or Diamond Lake (a rugged 13-mile beauty). The trails start outside the wilderness boundary, but once you cross over, it’s all USFS land, and you’ll need a permit for camping. Expect rocky creek crossings, views of the Continental Divide, and—this time of year—a patchwork quilt of changing leaves.

šŸš— Parking is extremely limited and heavily patrolled. Only park where signs say it’s allowed along Fourth of July Road—violations mean $50 fines or towing.

šŸ’© No restrooms on site. Plan accordingly.

🐶 Dogs are welcome but must stay leashed.

🧭 Coordinates: 39.9547° N, -105.6025° W

🚐 About the Shuttle: The Hessie Shuttle is a free seasonal service that runs Fridays–Sundays (and holidays) from Nederland through Sunday, Oct. 12. It’s the easiest way to reach the trailhead without battling for parking. It runs every 15 minutes and allows leashed dogs—more info here.

Pro tip: If the trailhead’s too packed, check out nearby alternatives like Caribou Ranch, East Portal, or Betasso Preserve.
