Big Wins for Boulder’s History 🪶⚾

Big Wins for Boulder’s History 🪶⚾

Boulder’s been busy this week — and for once, it’s the kind of news that makes you pause, smile, and say, “Yeah… this is why we live here.” Two major heritage stories hit the headlines: one honoring Boulder’s earliest peoples, and one saving a beloved local landmark that’s been home to home runs for over 70 years.

Let’s get into what’s happening around town:

⚾ Iris Fields Saved! Boulder County Approves Plan to Preserve a Local Classic

Big news for North Boulder: the county just voted 2–1 to approve a plan that keeps all four Iris Fields ballparks intact while allowing new development around them.

What’s coming:

  • All four historic ballfields stay

  • A new café + restaurant

  • A senior living center

  • Additional community space

North Boulder Little League showed up in force, and when the vote passed, the room erupted — a huge win after months of uncertainty.

The project now enters a 90-day review and will need city rezoning. But the headline is the one everyone hoped for: the ballfields are staying right where they are.

🪶 Boulder Secures Major Grant for Indigenous Heritage Preservation

Boulder just received a $214,605 grant from the Colorado State Historical Fund to support Tribal ethnographic research from 2026 to 2028.

What this means:

  • The city will continue partnering with Tribal Nations to document histories and cultural knowledge rooted in the Boulder Valley.

  • Living Heritage Anthropology, a woman-owned firm, will lead the research and expand on work already started.

  • Reports arriving in early 2026 will help guide city policy, school curriculum, and community education.

In short: Boulder is investing in telling its Indigenous history more accurately, respectfully, and in collaboration with Tribal Nations.

New CU Boulder Study Shows Decline in Young Pikas

A new CU Boulder study is raising alarms for the American pika, the tiny, squeaky alpine mammal that hikers love spotting in the Rockies. Long-term research at Niwot Ridge (near Nederland) shows that juvenile pika numbers have dropped by about 50% since the 1980s — leaving populations dominated by older adults with fewer young replacing them.

Scientists can’t confirm the exact cause, but warming summers and climate-related stress are likely factors. Because pikas only survive within a narrow temperature range, hotter conditions may be making it harder for young pikas to migrate or survive. Researchers say the trend is a concerning sign for alpine ecosystems that Colorado communities rely on.
