Happy Monday, Boulder! 🌞

You could spend weeks in Boulder and still not hit every great trail… so choosing where to start can feel impossible. Some routes are easy and scenic, others will have you questioning your life choices halfway up 😅. If you want the best bang-for-your-time picks, keep reading.

Want more local recs? Check out our Things to Do in Boulder, Best Restaurants, and Date-Worthy Spots for even more ideas.

What’s Happenin’ is growing — want to join us?

Last month our local newsletters across Boulder, Arvada, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Denver were opened 177,000+ times by locals looking for things to do and places to go.

As we continue to grow, I’m looking to add one or two people to help with partnerships with local businesses.

If you love supporting local businesses and want to help grow these newsletters, just reply to this email and tell me a little about yourself.

Boulder Creek Path

Trying to pick just one trail in Boulder is like trying to pick your favorite brewery… it’s not happening. The good news? You really can’t go wrong—whether you want an easy scenic stroll or a leg-burning climb with big payoffs, Boulder delivers fast.

Here’s how locals would break it down if you only have a few days:

🌊 Boulder Creek Path (The “Do This First” Trail)

This is the one people keep coming back to—and for good reason.

  • Follows Boulder Creek from the canyon → through downtown → out east

  • Mix of paved + smooth gravel

  • Easy, scenic, and super accessible

If you head west into the canyon, you’ll get that classic Boulder vibe: rushing water, canyon walls, and a peaceful ride or walk without cars. Go east, and it turns into more of a cruisy city connector with tons of stops along the way.

👉 If you only do one thing… start here.

🏔️ Chautauqua & Baseline Road (Flatirons Views Without the Grind)

Want those iconic Boulder views without a brutal climb? This is your move.

  • Ride or walk up Baseline to Chautauqua

  • Minimal elevation gain (by Boulder standards 😅)

  • Front-row views of the Flatirons

It’s one of the easiest ways to get that “I’m in Boulder” moment without committing to a full hike.

🚴 US-36 Bike Path (Easy Miles, Big Views)

Not the most exciting ride—but definitely one of the easiest ways to take in the scenery.

  • Long, straight paved path

  • No car traffic

  • Mountain views the whole way

Perfect if you want to rack up miles or just cruise without thinking too much about terrain.

🌄 Flagstaff Mountain (For a Challenge + Payoff)

If you want to earn your views, this is where things get real.

  • Steep climbs

  • Winding mountain road

  • Huge panoramic views at the top

It’s a favorite for cyclists and hikers who want that “I did something today” feeling.

🌲 Eldorado Canyon (Underrated Gem)

A little outside the main Boulder bubble—but worth it.

  • Dramatic canyon walls

  • Solid climb, but not extreme

  • Less crowded than other spots

Great option if you want something scenic without being right in the middle of town.

☕ Bonus Move: Ride to Niwot

If you’re biking, locals love linking trails together and heading toward Niwot.

  • Chill ride east of Boulder

  • Mountain views the whole way

  • Coffee stop reward at the end

⚠️ Quick Local Tips

Altitude is no joke—you’ll feel ~20% weaker than usual

Trails connect everywhere, so don’t stress about planning the perfect route

  • Watch for narrow sections and blind curves on shared paths

  • If you want to cover more ground → consider an e-bike

👋 Before You Hit the Trail…

Whether you’re chasing views, a chill walk, or a full-on climb, Boulder’s got a trail for it. The hardest part is knowing when to stop exploring and grab a post-hike snack (or beer).

Boulder isn’t about one “must-do” trail—it’s about how easily everything connects. Start with Boulder Creek, see how you feel, and build from there.

And yes… if you end up tubing down the creek instead, locals would say you made the right call too 😄

Keep the recs coming, keep voting, and if there’s a place you’re convinced belongs on the next list, just hit reply. I really do read every single one.

Forward this to a Boulder buddy who needs a breather.

See you Wednesday, Boulder.

— Ben
