Happy Wednesday, Boulder! 🌞

Somewhere above the city tonight, someone’s about to realize climbing outside feels way cooler than hanging onto plastic holds under fluorescent lights. And if you’ve ever looked up at the Flatirons and thought “how do people even get up there?” — this one’s for you.

In today’s What’s Happenin’:

• A free intro to outdoor climbing on Flagstaff

• Why Flagstaff Mountain is basically Boulder’s front porch

• A little local trivia for your next trail break

Let’s get to it.

What’s Happenin’ is growing — want to join us?

Last month our local newsletters across Boulder, Arvada, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Denver were opened 275,000+ times by locals looking for things to do and places to go.

As we continue to grow, I’m looking to add one or two people to help with partnerships with local businesses.

If you love supporting local businesses and want to help grow these newsletters, just reply to this email and tell me a little about yourself.

🧗 Free Outdoor Climbing Lessons Are Back on Flagstaff

🧗 Free Outdoor Climbing Lessons Are Back on Flagstaff

There are few things more Boulder than casually finishing work and then heading up a mountain to hang off a rock wall before dinner.

Starting tonight, Rope Wranglers is hosting a free Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing series every Wednesday evening on Flagstaff Mountain through July 1 — and it’s designed for total beginners, curious visitors, and gym climbers ready to touch actual Boulder sandstone for the first time.

The vibe is intentionally low-pressure. No intimidating “expert climber only” energy. Just a chance to learn the basics while overlooking one of the prettiest views in town.

Participants will learn:

  • 🧗 How outdoor climbing actually works

  • 🪢 Knots, belaying, and safety systems

  • 🎒 Proper gear fitting

  • 🏔️ Intro tips for Boulder’s famous climbing areas

And honestly, this might be one of the best “try something new” events in Boulder right now because climbing here isn’t just a hobby — it’s part of the city’s identity.

The Flatirons have drawn climbers from around the world for decades, and Flagstaff has become the unofficial gateway for beginners looking to understand why people get obsessed with it. One minute you’re nervously learning knots, the next you’re pricing chalk bags and saying things like “approach trail.”

🌄 Why Everyone in Boulder Ends Up on Flagstaff Eventually

Flagstaff Mountain is kind of Boulder’s all-purpose escape button.

Sunrise spot? Yep.
Late-night overlook? Absolutely.
First date location? Basically a local requirement.
Place where someone inevitably says “we should get into climbing”? Also yes.

The winding road, the panoramic city views, the trailheads, the pull-offs — it’s one of those places that makes Boulder feel like Boulder. Even if you never climb, Flagstaff somehow ends up becoming part of your routine.

And for climbers? It’s where a lot of people get their first taste of real outdoor rock.

Before it became a scenic mountain road, what was Flagstaff Mountain originally known for?
