šŖØ Flagstaffās Ancient Core

Molten rock cooled into solid stone, and erosion has since peeled back the layers to reveal this ancient Earth interior. Basically, Flagstaff is a geologic time machine with a great view.
šļø Flatirons and the Great Tilt
The iconic Flatirons are made of the Fountain Formation, sedimentary rock formed from the erosion of an even older Rocky Mountain range. Originally horizontal layers, these rocks got a dramatic makeover 65 million years ago when the modern Rockies roseāthink giant stone drawbridge, tilted to the sky. The Maroon Bells? Theyāre the western half of that same formation.

š Boulder Was Beachfront Property
About 135 million years ago, a vast inland sea rolled in, forming sandy beaches that hardened into Dakota sandstoneāvisible at Echo Rocks and near NCAR. You can even spot ancient ripple marks frozen in stone. Beneath much of Boulder lies Pierre Shale, deposited while dinosaurs wandered the shoreline.
šļø Mountains, Uplift, and Ice
The Rockies got a second life about 8 million years ago, lifting the land and sculpting what we now call home. Then came the Ice Age: though glaciers didnāt reach OSMP, the meltwater surged through, carving deep canyons and flattening mesas. Todayās gentle creeks are the leftover whispers of those savage melt rivers.
