š« Boulder Cravings: Illegal Peteās (The Hill)
Illegal Peteās on The Hill is a Boulder classic for a reason. Big, build-your-own burritos, solid tacos, and that always-dangerous queso make this a reliable stop whether youāre fueling up before class, grabbing a casual lunch, or easing into happy hour. The vibe is laid-back, the prices stay reasonable, and the menu is friendly to vegans, vegetarians, and gluten-free eaters alike.

𦫠Flatiron Freddy: Boulderās Groundhog Day Icon
Forget Punxsutawney ā Boulder has its own weather-predicting legend, and he wears a top hat. Every February 2, Flatiron Freddy (a very dapper marmot meteorologist) makes his much-anticipated appearance at the Ranger Cottage in Chautauqua Park, blending folklore, science, and peak Boulder weirdness into one unforgettable morning.
This quirky tradition has been going strong for more than 15 years and is hosted by the City of Boulder Rangers, who turn Groundhog Day into a fun, family-friendly lesson on wildlife, seasons, astronomy, and why a real groundhog wouldnāt actually see its shadow in Colorado. Youāll learn how sun and moon patterns tie into the holiday ā plus how climate and seasonal shifts affect our marmot neighbors.
And then thereās Freddy himself. Over the years, heās āemergedā in truly legendary fashion ā think canoes, fire engines, bobsleds, skis, zip lines, and even magical stumps. No two appearances are ever the same, which is half the fun.
You can catch the action in person at the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage (arrive early for free breakfast treats and drinks ā parking is limited) or tune in virtually via livestream if your alarm clock loses the battle. Either way, this is one of those delightfully odd Boulder traditions that locals quietly adore.
Set the alarm. Grab a warm layer. Trust the marmot.
