Trump Administration Floats Plan to Break Up NCAR in Boulder

A Trump administration official says the federal government plans to “break up” NCAR, the Boulder-based climate and weather research center — but no formal plan has been released.

NCAR employs about 830 people and plays a major role in wildfire, flood, and severe weather forecasting nationwide.

  • OMB Director Russ Vought called NCAR a source of “climate alarmism.”

  • The National Science Foundation says it’s reviewing NCAR’s scope but hasn’t announced changes.

  • Colorado leaders and scientists question whether the administration has the authority to dismantle it.

Lawmakers are pushing back, legal options are being explored, and public protests are planned in Boulder.
