Happy Wednesday, Boulder! đ
Ben here â Boulderâs best hikes get all the hype, but the quiet trails are where the magic is. If you want fresh air without the shoulder-to-shoulder vibe, I pulled a few routes that feel like local secrets (even though theyâre minutes from downtown). Go early, bring a warm drink, and enjoy that âwaitâŚhow is this so empty?â feeling.

đż Boulderâs Best Secret Trails (Minutes From Downtown)
Tucked just beyond the usual Chautauqua chaos are a few lesser-known trails locals quietly adore. Think prehistoric forests, stone âliving rooms,â and trailheads you can walk to from downtown.
đ˛ Long Canyon Trail (The Ice Age Surprise)
Accessible from Realization Point, this mellow trail hides one of Coloradoâs rarest sights: ancient paper birch trees that survived the last Ice Age. Itâs peaceful, shaded, and feels wildly different from most Front Range hikes.
𪨠Woods Quarry Trail (Boulderâs Stone Living Room)
Branch off the Mesa Trail from Chautauqua and youâll find an old quarry where hikers have arranged massive sandstone slabs into chairs and couchesâplus sweeping views over Boulder Valley. A perfect âwaitâŚhow is this real?â spot.
đŁ Peoplesâ Crossing â Red Rocks Trails
Just west of downtown near Eben G. Fine Park, this low-key trailhead unlocks access to Red Rocks, Anemone, and Sunshine Canyonâwithout the usual trailhead stress.
đ Boulder Creek Path (Crowd Hack Edition)
Yes, itâs popularâbut go early morning or on a weekday and this 5.5-mile path becomes a serene stroll along the creek, right through the heart of town.

Trump Administration Official Says NSF Will âBreak Upâ NCAR in Boulder
The future of Boulder-based NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) is uncertain after a Trump administration official said the federal government plans to dismantle the research institution.
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought posted on X that the National Science Foundation would be âbreaking upâ NCAR, calling it a source of âclimate alarmism.â He said a review is underway and that essential work like weather research could be moved elsewhere â but offered no details.
NCAR officials say theyâve received no formal notice and currently have no information confirming a breakup.
NCAR employs about 750 scientists and staff in Boulder and plays a major role in weather forecasting, climate research, wildfire and flood modeling, and national securityârelated science.
Gov. Jared Polis warned that dismantling NCAR could put public safety and U.S. scientific leadership at risk, while Rep. Joe Neguse called the move âdangerousâ and vowed to fight it.
As of now, NSF has not announced any official changes, and no documentation outlining a restructuring has been released.
