🌲 We Hiked Brainard to Long Lake — And You Absolutely Should Too
If you’re craving an alpine escape that feels far away but is just 30–40 minutes from Boulder, it’s time to lace up your boots and head to Long Lake. We hit the trail this weekend, and let’s just say: it might be one of our favorite fall hikes of the year.
Starting from the Brainard Lake Recreation Area (yes, you’ll need a timed-entry pass from Recreation.gov, and yes, it’s 1000% worth it), this trail is a smooth and scenic walk through Colorado’s best high-country terrain. The hike is relatively easy—great for casual hikers, families, or anyone looking to soak in big views without a huge elevation climb. The trail is well-marked and well-maintained, winding through meadows, past pines, and around a few leftover snow patches (don’t worry—they’re off-trail and out of the way).
About halfway to Long Lake, there’s a second parking lot with bathrooms (pro tip: good place for a mid-hike pit stop). Once you reach Long Lake, take a moment to just breathe it in—glass-like water reflecting the mountains, golden light on the trees, and the quiet kind of stillness you can’t find in town.
Feeling ambitious? Keep going to Lake Isabelle for more views and a bit more elevation gain. Bring snacks, a camera, and an extra layer—temperatures drop quickly up there, especially in the shade.
📅 Best time to visit: Now through mid-October. The snow hasn’t taken over yet, the fall colors are still popping, and the trails are absolutely stunning.
💡 Quick Tips:
• Make a parking reservation ahead of time
• Dress in layers — alpine weather changes fast
• Bring water and a snack for lakeside lounging
• Dogs are allowed on leash
• Pack out your trash and stay on trail (Leave No Trace, always!)
