🍺 Brewing Beer in a Time of Temperance

🍺 Brewing Beer in a Time of Temperance

History, hops, and a little local drama

Boulder County has always loved its beer—but it hasn’t always been easy to enjoy it. This fascinating evening at the Museum of Boulder dives into a lesser-known chapter of local history, when brewing traditions clashed head-on with the temperance movement shaping nearby communities.

Hosted by the Beer Culture Center, the program explores how Austrian and German immigrants built Boulder County’s early beer culture in the 1860s and 1870s—while just down the road, Longmont was founded as a strict temperance colony where being caught drinking could literally cost you your livelihood. Historian Travis Rupp (University of Colorado Boulder) unpacks how these opposing values coexisted, collided, and shaped the region we know today.

And yes—this is a history talk with beer, not about beer you can’t have. You’ll sip, mingle, and learn how ideology, immigration, and alcohol all fermented into Boulder County’s unique past.
