👀 We Asked. You Answered. Now… Do We Reveal

The question is…

🎨 Should we reveal the new sticker designs this Wednesday?

🌾 Wild & Wide Open at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

🌾 Wild & Wide Open at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

If you’re craving fresh air without the I-70 traffic, this one’s for you. Just 10 miles from downtown, there’s a place where bison roam, bald eagles perch, and the skyline feels a million miles away. Keep reading — because this might be the easiest nature reset you take all week.

Why It’s a Mile High Must

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the country — and it’s completely FREE to visit. Yep, zero dollars to swap skyscrapers for prairie grass and see wildlife that looks straight out of a Yellowstone documentary.

This 15,000-acre sanctuary has one of the coolest comeback stories in Colorado. Once farmland, then a WWII manufacturing site, it’s now a thriving wildlife haven protecting more than 330 species — including our national symbol, the bald eagle 🦅.

What You’ll See

  • 🦬 Bison herds (yes, real ones — stay 75 feet away and in your car when required)

  • 🦌 Mule and white-tailed deer

  • 🦉 Burrowing owls & raptors

  • 🐦 Migrating songbirds & waterfowl

  • 🐾 Coyotes, prairie dogs, and more

Each season brings something different — cinnamon-colored bison calves in spring, wildflowers and pelicans in summer, golden grass and sandhill cranes in fall, and snow-dusted bison with bald eagles in winter.

Things To Do (Besides Gawk at Bison)

  • 🚗 Drive the 11-mile Wildlife Drive (45–60 mins, podcast included)

  • 🥾 Explore 20 miles of easy hiking trails

  • 🚴 Bike select trails (Class 1 e-bikes allowed in certain areas)

  • 🎯 Practice at the archery range

  • 🎣 Fish seasonally at Lake Mary & Lake Ladora (small fee)

  • 📚 Check out the Visitor Center (Wed–Sun, 9am–4pm)

Pro tip: When the Wildlife Drive becomes one-way in the bison area, you must stay in your vehicle. They’re majestic… and very much in charge.

Know Before You Go

  • 🕰️ Open sunrise to sunset (May 1–Aug 1 until 8pm)

  • 💨 Woody debris burns may cause visible smoke through May

  • 🐶 Only service dogs allowed

  • 🚫 No swimming in Refuge lakes

  • 🅿️ Park in designated lots

Located at 6550 Gateway Road in Commerce City — basically your “no-excuses” outdoor adventure for the week.
