🌲 FoCo’s Secret Parks & Pocket Trails (A Little Local Shortlist)

🌲 FoCo’s Secret Parks & Pocket Trails (A Little Local Shortlist)

“FoCo” doesn’t have one official “secret park,” but ask around and you’ll hear the same thing: there are lots of little pockets, themed playgrounds, and tucked-away trails that feel delightfully off-radar. Here’s a starter list to explore — some you’ll recognize, others might be brand new to you.

Not a “best of” ranking — just a love note to the places locals turn to when they want a quiet walk, a kiddo adventure, or a quick nature reset.

🐝 Tailwinds Park

Vibe: Thoughtful, sensory-friendly, quietly brilliant.

One of the newer parks in town, Tailwinds earns love for its autism-friendly playground, pollinator garden, and mellow vibe. Add in a half basketball court, a climbing boulder, and a hammock area and you’ve got a park that somehow works for kids, teens, and “I just want to swing in a hammock and scroll” adults.

🌼 The Gardens on Spring Creek

Vibe: Botanical “secret garden” that isn’t really a secret.

Locals know it — but it still feels underrated. This 18-acre botanical garden is stitched together with themed spaces: rock garden, children’s garden, wetland garden, and more. It’s perfect for slow strolls, plant-nerding, or reading a book on a bench. Admission is free (donations encouraged), which makes it an easy “I’ve got an hour to kill” option.

🦴 Fossil Creek Park

Vibe: Prehistoric fever dream meets neighborhood hang.

Not exactly unknown, but the fossil/prehistoric playground theme earns it a spot on any “unique FoCo parks” list. Dino bones, big open fields, walking paths, water features, and mountain views — it’s the place you take kids who think playgrounds should double as movie sets.

🌾 Twin Silo Park

Vibe: Iconic playground, sneaky pocket-trail energy.

Famous for the towering silo slide and huge play structure, Twin Silo is where a lot of families go to wear kids out fast. But beyond the playground, you’ll find little paths, open fields, and spots along the way that feel a lot quieter than the main play area. Bonus: clean, modern bathrooms. Parents, you know why that matters.

🚲 Traverse Park

Vibe: Small-but-mighty kid adventure zone.

This one shows up on a lot of local “hidden gem” lists because of its kids’ pump track and interesting play structure. If you’ve got stride-bike riders or scooter kids, this is a great place to let them practice without dealing with bigger, busier trail systems.

🐎 Overland Park

Vibe: Tiny, quirky, and very FoCo.

Overland is one of those “wait, what is this?” parks that you only find by living nearby — complete with a covered wagon structure that kids love climbing on. It’s not big or flashy, but it’s exactly the kind of neighborhood park people get weirdly attached to.

🌊 Quiet Corners of the Poudre River Trail

Vibe: Choose-your-own-secret-spot.

The Poudre River Trail runs through a lot of town, but scattered along it are small, secluded pockets where you can sit by the water, birdwatch, or just zone out. Access from places like Lee Martinez Park or near the Whitewater Park, then wander a bit to find your own little bend in the river to claim.

🏔 Arthur’s Rock & Lory State Park (Close, but worth it)

Vibe: FoCo’s “I’ve only got a half-day” mini escape.

Just west of town, Arthur’s Rock in Lory State Park is hardly a secret — but hit it on a weekday or shoulder season and it still feels surprisingly quiet. Short but punchy hike, big views over Horsetooth Reservoir and the plains, and lots of side trails to explore if you’ve got extra energy.

💧 Horsetooth Reservoir’s Lesser-Known Nooks

Vibe: Micro-adventures just outside town.

Everyone knows Horsetooth for boating and big summer crowds, but there are pockets along the shore and in nearby open spaces that stay much calmer. Think: little side trails, rocky overlooks, quiet coves where you can sit with a thermos and breathe for a bit.

🚵 “Forgotten” Singletrack & Western Slope Wanderings

Vibe: For the folks who delete trail names from their ride logs.

Ask any long-time mountain biker and they’ll hint about less-traveled trails on the western side of our nearby foothills — the kind of places you only find via a friend-of-a-friend or a hand-drawn map. If that’s your scene, you probably already know: rule #1 of hidden trails is you don’t drop GPS pins in public.

How to Explore Without Wrecking the Vibe

• Stay on established trails (even the small ones).

• Pack it in, pack it out — the quiet spots don’t have big crews picking up trash.

• Respect neighbors: some pocket parks sit right up against backyards.

• Share the space — but maybe don’t bring your entire 30-person kickball league.

FoCo Calls In 600-Pound Hogs to Tackle Weeds

A Fort Collins HOA is testing a new weed-removal tactic: massive 600-pound black hogs that dig up stubborn kochia weeds by the roots — a job goats can’t always finish.

It’s a surprisingly effective, chemical-free approach that could expand city-wide if the pilot program succeeds.

  • Run by AloTerra, a FoCo-based ecological company.

  • Hogs “root out” weeds completely — unlike goats, which graze the tops.

  • Breed: large black hogs (“limousine pigs”) known for size, work ethic, and surprising friendliness.

  • Pilot plot: mowing vs. mowing + pesticides vs. hogs.

  • Early results? Hogs winning.

City Council would need to approve permits before expanding hog grazing throughout Fort Collins — officials are “cautiously optimistic.”
