Fort Collins’ Spooky Side: Abandoned Places Locals Still Talk About
Hey there, FoCo,
Happy Monday! We’re kicking off Halloween week with a little adventure into the spookier side of Fort Collins—no costumes required. We asked some FoCo locals where they go to find a little eerie, a little history, and a whole lotta weird vibes—and wow, did the stories roll in.
Which Fort Collins relic still has its original taxiways and an occasional plane landing?

Fort Collins’ Forgotten Corners: Cool (and Kinda Creepy) Abandoned Spots
Strauss Cabin
Turns out, while Fort Collins doesn’t have a long list of classic abandoned places, there are some offbeat, semi-forgotten, or downright ghostly corners worth knowing about:
🏚️ Midtown Mall Mystery
📍 Near College & Horsetooth
This half-empty, mostly-forgotten mall still lingers in the minds of locals. Some say it feels like stepping into a late-night liminal dream. “About college and Horsetooth,” one person said simply—and that was enough.
🛫 Ghost Runways at the Old Downtown Airport
📍 Near Laporte St.
The old Fort Collins Downtown Airpark still has taxiways and bits of runway left, perfect for a sunset walk with a side of nostalgia. It’s technically CSU property now—planes occasionally still land here!
🏚️ Burned-Down Cabin on Strauss Road
Once a favorite for spooky photoshoots, this cabin was unfortunately torched after being restored as a heritage site. It’s gone, but the memory lives on for many locals.
🏞️ Ruins Along the Poudre & Near Horsetooth
Several locals pointed out old structures along the Poudre River Trail or near Horsetooth Reservoir. Not exactly “abandoned,” but eerie in that perfect Colorado-way. Just remember: if there’s a “No Trespassing” sign—don’t push your luck.
🕵️ Bonus Trivia: WWII Relics in NoCo?
One tip led us to Missile Park Rd, west of Greeley. There’s a plaque marking a German POW camp, and some say there’s an old nuclear missile base nearby.
And yes, apparently a Japanese bomb once fell in Timnath during WWII. (Seriously. Look it up.)
🏭 Honorable Mention: Longmont’s Abandoned Sugar Mill
Not technically FoCo, but a local favorite for urban legends. Rumors swirl about what went down there—and what might still be lurking inside. Proceed with caution… and maybe a buddy.
