Longmont Will End Use of Flock License Plate Cameras

Longmont City Council voted 5–1 to let its contract with Flock Safety expire in March, choosing not to renew the city’s use of automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras.

Longmont becomes one of the first cities in Colorado to cut ties with Flock amid concerns over data privacy and how driver location data has been shared by other agencies.

What happened:

  • Council paused all extension talks and voted to end the contract

  • The city will turn off data sharing with other jurisdictions immediately

  • Public safety leaders were asked to explore alternative crime-solving tools

Investigations revealed other Colorado agencies shared Flock data with federal immigration authorities, potentially violating state law. License plate data is considered personal identifying information in Colorado.

Longmont police say the cameras have helped solve crimes, but the city will now look for privacy-compliant alternatives moving forward.
