Happy Monday, Longmont!🧔

Getting outside shouldn’t feel like a punishment—especially when your knees are already filing complaints. The good news? There are plenty of trails nearby where you can still soak in the views without the steep climbs… read on to find your next go-to.

What’s Happenin’ is growing — want to join us?

Last month our local newsletters across Boulder, Arvada, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Denver were opened 177,000+ times by locals looking for things to do and places to go.

As we continue to grow, I’m looking to add one or two people to help with partnerships with local businesses.

If you love supporting local businesses and want to help grow these newsletters, just reply to this email and tell me a little about yourself.

Rabbit Mountain

Not every hike needs to leave you sore for three days. Around Longmont, there are plenty of spots where you can still get that ā€œI’m out in natureā€ feeling—without steep climbs, sketchy descents, or endless stairs.

Here are some local favorites that strike that perfect balance:

  • Golden Ponds Nature Area
    šŸ“ Longmont | 🌿 Easy
→ A peaceful mix of water, wildlife, and wide dirt paths. It’s close to town but feels surprisingly tucked away once you’re in it.

  • Rabbit Mountain (Service Road Route)
    šŸ“ Near Lyons | 🌿 Easy–Moderate
→ Skip the steeper trails and take the road up—it’s a gradual climb with rewarding views at the top. Great for a light ā€œleg dayā€ without overdoing it.

  • Coot Lake + Boulder Reservoir Loop
    šŸ“ Boulder | 🌿 Easy
→ Flat, scenic, and open. You’ll get mountain views, water, and plenty of space to move at your own pace.

  • McIntosh Lake Loop
    šŸ“ Longmont | 🌿 Easy
→ A go-to for locals. It’s more ā€œwalkableā€ than rugged, but the lake + mountain backdrop combo always delivers.

  • Sandstone Ranch / St. Vrain Greenway
    šŸ“ Longmont | 🌿 Easy
→ Wide trails, river views, and a little more distance if you want to stretch things out without stressing your knee.

  • Button Rock Preserve (Longmont Dam Road)
    šŸ“ West of Lyons | 🌿 Easy–Moderate
→ A hidden gem. The road follows the reservoir with a gentle incline and zero technical terrain—just you, the water, and canyon views.

  • Lagerman Reservoir + Open Sky Loop
šŸ“ North Boulder County | 🌿 Easy
→ Big skies, quiet trails, and just enough rolling terrain to feel like a hike without pushing it.

  • Fowler Trail at Eldorado Canyon
    šŸ“ Eldorado Springs | 🌿 Easy–Moderate
→ One of the best ā€œbang for your buckā€ trails—minimal elevation gain, but huge canyon views the whole way.

šŸ’” Pro Tips for Knee-Friendly Hiking

  • Look for wide, packed-dirt trails or service roads (your knees will thank you)

  • Avoid loose gravel + steep descents (that’s usually the real culprit)

  • Go earlier in the day for fewer crowds + cooler temps

  • Trekking poles = lowkey game changer if you’re easing back in

You don’t have to sit out hiking season—you just have to hike smarter. And honestly? These spots prove you can still get fresh air, views, and that ā€œweekend resetā€ feeling without pushing your limits.
