Happy Wednesday, Longmont! 🍷✨

Hi! I'm Ben, founder of What's Happenin' Longmont. Your local explorer and coffee-fueled day trip enthusiast. When the air gets crisp and the mountains start showing off their snowy peaks, I can’t resist hitting the road for a quick adventure. Whether you’re chasing wildlife, sipping cider in a mountain town, or just soaking up the season’s best views, these day trips make it easy to get out there without going far.

Eldora Mountain Ski Resort

I’ve been thinking — this might just be the best time of year for a quick day trip. Whether you’re craving a cozy coffee stop, a glimpse of wildlife, or a dash of mountain snow, there’s plenty of fall-to-winter magic within an hour’s drive. I’ve rounded up my favorite escapes — all arranged from closest to farthest from Longmont, so you can pick your next adventure by distance (and daylight).

🍺 Niwot (7 miles)

This small town packs a big personality — think historic charm, boutique shops, and no stoplights. Grab a local brew, poke through the galleries, or catch live tunes during one of their seasonal events.

❄️ Lyons (12 miles)

A winter weekend must. Explore Lavern M. Johnson Park for snow-dusted tubing and ice skating, or grab a seat at the original Oskar Blues Grill & Brew. Plus, Button Rock Preserve’s winter trails are just up the road for an easy scenic hike.

🎨 Boulder (16 miles)

Yes, Boulder’s right down the road — but it’s a whole mood in winter. Wander Pearl Street’s twinkle lights, grab tea at Celestial Seasonings, or hit a trail at Chautauqua for those frosty Flatiron views.

🍻 Fort Collins (30 miles)

FoCo glows in the winter — Old Town lights up, the breweries flow strong, and Horsetooth Reservoir sparkles under frost. Stop for lunch, then cruise the Cache la Poudre Scenic Byway for a scenic finale.

🏔️ Nederland & Eldora Ski Resort (32 miles)

Looking for snow without the I-70 slog? Nederland’s quirky charm and Eldora’s slopes are just over 30 miles away. You’ll find easy ski runs, the heartwarming Carousel of Happiness, and plenty of cozy cafés to warm up in.

👻 Estes Park (33 miles)

Ghost stories, hot cocoa, and mountain vibes — what’s not to love? Visit the Stanley Hotel (Stephen King fans, you know the one), stroll the Riverwalk, and watch elk wander through town before heading back down to Longmont.

🏞️ Rocky Mountain National Park (33 miles)

Fewer crowds, more snow-dusted peaks. Try a crisp winter hike near Bear Lake, go wildlife spotting in Moraine Park, or just enjoy the scenic drive to Trail Ridge Road’s winter closure gate. It’s a whole new park in the colder months.

🎭 Denver (35 miles)

From holiday markets to museum nights, Denver’s winter energy hits different. Catch a show, check out the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Blossoms of Light, or take that iconic selfie with the Blue Bear downtown.

🦁 Keenesburg — The Wild Animal Sanctuary (36 miles)

Trade snow boots for a skywalk! Just east of Longmont, this 720-acre refuge rescues and rehabilitates lions, tigers, bears, and more — all visible from the elevated Mile Into the Wild walkway. Bundle up, bring binoculars, and spend a quiet afternoon watching wildlife roam free.
