🥾 Hiking the High Ground: Rabbit Mountain’s Eagle Wind Trail

Hey Longmont!

If you’re craving a hike that’s part cardio blast, part nature show, Rabbit Mountain Open Space delivers. Just a quick hop from Longmont, this plateau hike gives you the uphill challenge up front, then rewards you with three miles of breezy, view-filled wandering. And with coyotes, deer, and eagles often making guest appearances, you’ll want to keep your camera (and your awe) ready.

Longmont Trivia 🌅

🥾 Hiking the High Ground: Rabbit Mountain’s Eagle Wind Trail

If you like your hikes with a side of panoramic views and a dash of wildlife drama, Rabbit Mountain Open Space is your spot. The Eagle Wind Trail starts with a bit of a “welcome workout” — a short uphill to get your heart pumping — then flattens into an easygoing loop across the plateau. Up here, you’re surrounded by jaw-dropping front range vistas and the kind of big-sky energy that makes you want to linger.

This 3.8-mile loop is friendly for leashed pups, dotted with covered picnic tables, and has cell service for most of the way (perfect for snapping and sharing those epic ridge-line shots). Keep your eyes peeled — deer, eagles, rabbits, and even coyotes like to make an appearance. Pro tip: in summer, bring sunscreen; in winter, microspikes will be your best friend for that first stretch.

The Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain also offers two other trails — Indian Mesa and Little Thompson Overlook — if you want to make a day of it. And since there’s no entrance fee, you can spend your dollars on post-hike snacks in Longmont. Just remember: day use only, no camping, and please keep those pups leashed so the local wildlife can keep living their best lives.
