🐾 Rabbit Mountain 101: Hike, Wildlife, and a Scenic Drive
If you’re itching for a quick nature fix that doesn’t require a full tank of gas, we’ve got just the spot. This week, we’re heading to one of Boulder County’s most underrated open spaces — Rabbit Mountain.
Located just 5 miles northwest of town, Rabbit Mountain Open Space blends wide prairie views with rugged foothills, making it a perfect trail system for mellow hikes, wildlife watching, and scenic drives as the leaves start to turn.
Here’s why locals love it:
🥾 Indian Mesa Trail – A moderate 3-mile loop with big-sky views, sandstone outcrops, and a solid leg burn.
🦅 Eagle Wind Trail – Quieter, slightly longer, and a great loop to spot birds of prey and mule deer.
🚗 The drive alone is worth it – Especially at sunrise or golden hour, when the foothills glow and the Front Range lights up.
Pro tip: Visit early or late in the day for fewer people and better wildlife sightings. Coyotes, elk herds, and red-tailed hawks are regular guests.
Dogs are welcome (on leash), and the park is open sunrise to sunset. Just plug in: Rabbit Mountain Open Space and follow the signs north on 75th Street past Hygiene.
