Bird Nerds, This One’s for You

Happy Monday, Longmont!🧔

There’s something oddly satisfying about being outside before most of the city has even had coffee yet. This week, one of Longmont’s coolest hidden gems is turning into the perfect excuse to slow down, look up, and maybe become way more invested in birds than you expected.

What’s Happenin’ is growing — want to join us?

Last month our local newsletters across Boulder, Arvada, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Denver were opened 275,000+ times by locals looking for things to do and places to go.

As we continue to grow, I’m looking to add one or two people to help with partnerships with local businesses.

If you love supporting local businesses and want to help grow these newsletters, just reply to this email and tell me a little about yourself.

🐤 Guided Bird Walks at Sandstone Ranch

🐤 Guided Bird Walks at Sandstone Ranch

Longmont’s Sandstone Ranch is hosting guided bird walks this May — and honestly, this might be one of the most relaxing ways to spend a spring morning around town.

šŸ“ Sandstone Ranch | ā° May 5 & May 19, 7:30 AM–10:30 AM | šŸŽŸļø $4 (ages 10+, registration required)

Local birder Carl Starace leads the walks along the ranch’s scenic loop trails while helping spot and identify the many birds that pass through the area. Translation: you’ll finally know the difference between a finch, a hawk, and ā€œthat one loud bird outside my apartment at 5 AM.ā€

A few reasons this event feels very Longmont:

  • 🌿 Peaceful trails with mountain views and open space

  • šŸ¦… Tons of wildlife activity this time of year

  • 🚲 Bike-friendly paths if you want to turn it into a full morning adventure

  • šŸ› One of the coolest playground setups in town if you’re bringing kids later

  • ā˜• A perfect excuse to reward yourself with coffee afterward

The walks start at the Visitors Center upper parking lot, and organizers recommend bringing:

  • šŸ‘€ Binoculars

  • šŸ’§ Water

  • 🧢 Layers — because Colorado mornings love plot twists

And if you haven’t explored Sandstone Ranch lately, this is your reminder that the place is way more than sports fields. Between the trails, playgrounds, history, picnic areas, and nature spaces, it’s basically Longmont’s ā€œwhy don’t I come here more often?ā€ park.
