🥾 Hike the Heil Valley Trail This Fall

🥾 Hike the Heil Valley Trail This Fall

Fall is one of the best times to explore Heil Valley Ranch, and the Kruger Rock Trail is the standout. Just outside Longmont, this 5,000-acre open space transforms into a canvas of gold and red as cottonwoods and aspens put on their autumn show.

It’s a family-friendly hike with just enough challenge to make you feel accomplished—especially if you scramble up to the summit. Keep your eyes peeled for elk and wild turkeys, and don’t forget a snack (the top is the perfect picnic spot). With cooler temps and fiery fall colors, now’s the time to lace up those boots and hit Heil.

🌲 Trail Highlights

  • Lichen Loop (1.3 mi, Easy) – A short but scenic loop with interpretive signs that make it a great pick for families.

  • Overland Loop (2.3 mi, Moderate) – Wide open meadows with big sky views.

  • Picture Rock Trail (5.2 mi, Moderate) – A longer trek with rocky terrain and plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities.

  • Ponderosa Loop (2.6 mi, Moderate) – Winding through pine groves and shaded terrain.

  • Wapiti Trail (2.5 mi, Moderate) – A peaceful climb with rewarding vistas.

  • Wild Turkey Trail (2.9 mi, Moderate) – One of the most popular routes, where you just might cross paths with—you guessed it—wild turkeys. 🦃
