About This Event
From Stone to Color: Creating Watercolors from Front Range Geology Discover the vibrant story written in the rocks beneath your feet! Join ecologist and artist Erica for a unique workshop that bridges earth science and artistic practice through the geology of Colorado's Front Range. We'll explore the remarkable geological layers that form the dramatic landscape of the Front Range—from ancient Precambrian basement rocks nearly 2 billion years old to the red Fountain Formation sandstones and younger sedimentary layers. You'll learn to read the landscape through its rocks, understanding what each layer tells us about ancient oceans, mountain-building events, and the dynamic forces that shaped our region. Then, we'll transform geology into art. Using traditional techniques, you'll create your own natural watercolor pigments directly from these different rock layers. By grinding and processing samples representing different geological formations, you'll discover how each layer's unique mineral composition produces distinctive colors—ochres from iron-rich sediments, earth tones from shales, and unexpected hues from other formations. Participants will leave with: A deeper understanding of Front Range geology and landscape history Hands-on experience making natural pigments Custom watercolors created from the very rocks you've studied New appreciation for the connection between place, material, and art No prior geology or art experience required—just curiosity about the landscape and a willingness to get a little dusty!
