About This Event
Songs of Parents & Children Gustave Mahler had a health crisis that made him aware of his own mortality. This pushed him to compose a cycle of 5 songs for voice and chamber orchestra with the theme of the death of children, and the feelings of their surviving parents. Written at the high of his compositional powers, this cycle became one of his most personal and intimate musical expressions The cycle is based on Friedrich Rückert's Kindertotenlieder. Alexander Zemlinksy, a contemporary of Mahler’s, was largely overlooked until the 1960s, when the revival of Mahler’s music began to take hold. His clarinet trio is considered unusual for its use of clarinet in the trio format. This event is part of MahlerFest, held in Boulder from May 13-17 at various Boulder venues. This year, the 39th MahlerFest, celebrates “Reinvention: Channeling Change into Creativity”. Artistic Director Kenneth Woods (Director of the English Symphony) conducts the outstanding MahlerFest Orchestra, together with superb soloists and extraordinary ensembles.
