About This Event

A play giving insight into the tumultuous marriage of Gustave and Alma Mahler. At the age of 47, Mahler started over in New York City, first conducting the Metropolitan Opera and then the New York Philharmonic. Former NYTimes music critic Joseph Horowitz wrote a fictionalized book about Mahler and his wife Alma, and has adapted it for the stage. Horowitz’ play deals with the contradictions and complexities of Gustave Mahler. It is set in the context of his marriage to Alma , herself a contradictory partner, and perhaps the unwilling victim of his genius. This event is part of MahlerFest, held in Boulder from May 13-17 at various Boulder venues. This year, the 39th MahlerFest, celebrates “Reinvention: Channeling Change into Creativity”. Artistic Director Kenneth Woods (Director of the English Symphony) conducts the outstanding MahlerFest Orchestra, together with superb soloists and extraordinary ensembles.
