Job Description

Boulder County Community Services Department is seeking to hire 3 Head Start Classroom Substitute. The BCHS Substitute provides reliable, short-term instructional and caregiving support to ensure continuity of care and learning when regular classroom staff are absent. The substitute works collaboratively with teaching teams to maintain a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment aligned with Head Start Performance Standards, program curriculum, and daily routines. Responsibilities include supporting children’s learning and social-emotional development, following established lesson plans and behavior guidance practices, assisting with supervision, meals, and transitions; and upholding all health, safety, and confidentiality requirements. The role requires flexibility, and a commitment to supporting young children and families in a diverse, inclusive, and relationship-based Head Start setting. These are hourly, non-benefited positions that will work Monday - Friday 7:45am - 4:15pm as needed. These positions will work out of 2802 Dagny Way, Lafayette; 2850 Mapleton Ave, Boulder; or 2675 Mapleton Ave, Boulder, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, these positions are non-exempt (eligible for overtime). Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work. Hiring Salary Range: $25.00 Hourly Tentative Hiring Timeline: • Phone Screening: Week of February 9th • First Round Interviews: Week of February 9th • Reference Check: Week of February 9th Boulder County employees may qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Visit studentaid.gov for more information. • Support the implementation of daily classroom routines and activities as outlined by the lead teacher, including learning centers, outdoor play, meals, rest time, and transitions • Maintain active supervision of children at all times to ensure safety, including zoning, scanning, and positioning practices • Provide nurturing, responsive interactions that support children’s social-emotional development and positive behavior using program-approved guidance strategies • Assist with implementing developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF) • Support children with personal care needs as appropriate (e.g., handwashing, toileting, dressing, meals) while maintaining dignity and confidentiality • Follow all health, safety, and licensing requirements, including hygiene practices, meal supervision, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting responsibilities • Communicate respectfully with classroom staff, supervisors, and families as needed during arrival, dismissal, or transitions • Adapt to different classroom teams, age groups, and schedules with flexibility • Complete required documentation or share relevant observations with classroom staff or supervisors as requested • Performs related work, as required • May be reassigned during emergency situations PLEASE NOTE: When completing your application describe all relevant education and experience, as applications are assessed based on the required qualifications listed. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of: • A high school diploma or equivalent BACKGROUND CHECK & FINGERPRINTING: • A job offer is contingent on passing a background investigation with fingerprinting SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age • Applicants must hold a current, or being willing to obtain a PDIS Early Childhood Professional Credential - Level 2 within 12 months of hire PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Bilingual in English and Spanish • Additional compensation will be provided based on the use of bilingual skills. • One year (1,820 hours) of verified experience with preschool children KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: • Ability to use a computer with basic skills in Microsoft Office Products and internet-based assessment system or willingness to learn • Ability to work as a part of a team, channeling communications appropriately • Ability to relate well to children and adults from diverse backgrounds Boulder County is a workplace dedicated to supporting individuals and families of all types and to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful environment for all employees.
