💧 How Arvada Actually Saves Water (Without You Noticing)

wha - 4.20.jpg

Happy Monday, Arvada!

You’ve probably noticed it… greener yards, sprinklers running, parks still looking alive even when things are dry. But there’s more going on behind the scenes than just “use less water.” Some of it’s easy to miss, some of it’s actually kind of smart, and most people don’t realize they’re already part of it.

Today’s edition of What’s Happenin’ Arvada is well thought out, but it won’t take 12 years to read… only 5 minutes of the best things going on around town such as:
• Why your neighbor only waters twice a week now
• The simple sprinkler trick that saves more water than you’d think
• The one change the city recommends that most people ignore

What’s Happenin’ is growing — want to join us?

Last month our local newsletters across Boulder, Arvada, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Denver were opened 177,000+ times by locals looking for things to do and places to go.

As we continue to grow, I’m looking to add one or two people to help with partnerships with local businesses.

If you love supporting local businesses and want to help grow these newsletters, just reply to this email and tell me a little about yourself.

💧 Stage 1 Is Here (and It’s Already Changing Things)

💧 Stage 1 Is Here (and It’s Already Changing Things)

As of April 15, Arvada is under Stage 1 water restrictions. That basically means: water supply is tight, and the city is aiming to cut usage by about 20%.

You might not feel it directly, but it shows up in how and when people water around you.

🚿 Lawn Watering Is Now Scheduled

This is one of the biggest shifts:

  • You can only water your lawn 2 days per week

  • Your days depend on your address:

    • Even numbers → Sunday + Thursday

    • Odd numbers → Wednesday + Saturday

    • Multifamily/commercial → Tuesday + Friday

  • No watering between 10 AM and 6 PM

👉 Translation: those random mid-day sprinklers you used to see? Not allowed anymore.

⏱️ The “Short Cycle” Trick

Here’s a small but smart one most people miss:

  • Sprinklers should run in 5-minute cycles

  • Max 15 minutes per zone

Instead of soaking everything at once, the idea is to water in shorter bursts so the ground actually absorbs it instead of wasting runoff.

🌱 Plants Get a Free Pass (Kind Of)

Good news if you’ve got more than just grass:

  • Trees, shrubs, gardens, and flowers can be watered any day

  • But only with handheld hose or drip irrigation

  • Still no watering during peak heat hours

👉 This is why you’ll still see people watering… just more intentionally.

🚫 The Small Rules That Add Up

A bunch of little habits that quietly make a difference:

  • No spraying water onto sidewalks or streets

  • Fix leaking sprinklers quickly

  • Don’t water during rain or wind

  • Skip decorative fountains that spray into the air

👉 None of these feel huge, but together they cut a lot of waste.

🧠 The Sneaky Big One: Wait to Water

This one’s easy to overlook:

  • The city recommends waiting until May to turn on sprinklers

Letting your lawn stay dormant longer = less water used overall.

💡 The Bigger Picture

Arvada gets most of its water from Denver Water, so these rules aren’t random. They’re part of a larger system trying to stretch limited water across a growing population.

And the interesting part?
A lot of this is happening quietly. No big announcements, just small behavior shifts across the city that add up fast.

But when the whole city does it together, it adds up fast.
