Romeo & Juliet lands in Arvada, and itās not the sleepy version
If you think you already know Romeo and Juliet, this production might surprise you. The Arvada Center isnāt doing powdered wigs and polite sword fights. This one leans into urgency, tension, and the feeling that everything is about to snap.
Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities presents Romeo & Juliet in the Black Box Theatre from February 13 through March 29. Directed by Lynne Collins, the show runs about 1 hour and 30 minutes with no intermission, so once it starts, youāre in it.
The setup is classic Shakespeare. Two teenagers meet. They fall hard. Their families are locked in a violent feud that no one seems interested in ending. But this production places the story in a world that blends modern and ancient elements, making the division feel less like history and more like now.
What stands out here is the focus on how young people pay the price for grudges they didnāt create. The adults cling to power and pride. The kids try to carve out something honest in the middle of it. Itās messy, fast, and uncomfortable in the right ways.

If you havenāt seen live Shakespeare in a while, this is a good excuse. Itās intimate in the Black Box, which means youāre close enough to feel every argument and every bad decision in real time. And honestly, thatās kind of the point.
