Mileage: Varies (easy to moderate options)

🪨 Devil’s Backbone

Short, punchy, and perfect if you want something quick but rewarding. Often doable without special gear, though spikes help after storms.

Why it’s great: Low commitment, cool geology, great winter sun

Mileage: ~1.5–2 miles round trip

💎 Gem Lake

A go-to winter hike near Estes Park. Snow-packed and popular enough that snowshoes usually aren’t necessary—but spikes make it far more enjoyable.

Why it’s great: Alpine vibes without a long haul

Mileage: ~3.5 miles round trip

🌲 Poudre Canyon (Greyrock, Hewlett Gulch, Young Gulch)

Head west for quieter winter magic. Trail conditions vary, but many routes are doable with spikes and offer sunshine, solitude, and canyon views.

Llamas Are Back on Patrol in Fort Collins’ Natural Areas 🦙

A herd of llamas is quietly doing important work across Fort Collins natural areas — grazing grasslands to help restore a more natural ecosystem.

The city partners with local rancher Stan Ebel to use llamas as a low-impact way to mimic historic grazing patterns, improving soil health and native grasses without heavy machinery.

Recently, the herd has been grazing at Coyote Ridge Natural Area, rotating through open spaces as part of the city’s land stewardship program.

According to the city’s Fort Collins Natural Areas Department, managed grazing is one of several tools used to keep local ecosystems healthy — and the llamas are a community favorite while doing it.
