ABOUT THE BOOK Matt Murdock defends the Punisher in the trial of the century—the murder of the Kingpin—while by night Daredevil staves off a war of succession for the throne of the criminal underworld. The 164-foot air traffic control tower, along with its three-story base building, stands as one of the last reminders of Denver's first airport. Take a tour to the top of the air traffic control tower and learn more about the history of the airport, leaders who paved the way for aviation, and how the industry has evolved. This tour is a one-hour guided experience that takes you up 11 stories of stairs to the top of the tower, where you can see one of the best views of Denver. After your tour, enjoy a complimentary craft beer sample or N/A fountain beverage. $12 / person + taxes & fees. Times and dates vary, book your Tower Tour online in advance! More Information: What was once ranked as the third-busiest airport in the nation in 1961, is now a landmark in the vibrant Central Park community. The airport thrived until the 1980s, when demands of increasing international air traffic and the growing size and speed of jet aircraft could no longer be met. The Stapleton International Airport concluded flight service in 1995, ceding all air traffic to the newly constructed Denver International Airport (DIA). Mayor Wellington Webb and Denver’s city council saw the closing of Stapleton as an opportunity to create a thriving network of urban neighborhoods that are safe, unique, sustainable, economically viable, and pillars of urban design. Today, our neighborhood is comprised of 30,000+ diverse residents who readily enjoy concerts and farmer’s markets, award-winning schools, parks and pools, and now the FlyteCo Tower experience. As a one-stop shop for beer and aviation enthusiasts, we are proud to serve this incredible community! ***DISCLAIMER*** This historic tower tour does not have a working elevator. Prior to the opening date, collectors can preview the paintings beginning April 1 at 10:00 a.m. MT online by registering for the gallery’s e-mail list. Due to her fashion background, fabric is central to Manukyan’s work. In The Quiet Ceremony, Manukyan painted a young woman sitting in front of a series of porcelain containers with a design of the young woman’s blue and white dress. The detail of the lace is impressive and so too the beadwork catching the light. The reason for all of these details being important to Manukyan is the fact that she creates and sews much of the costume herself prior to picking up a brush. “It felt less like depiction and more like an act of quiet consecration,” she says of the process. However, the costumes themselves are not what the paintings are about. The faces of the subjects are what make this artwork unique. A young woman holding a white fox against her chest as snow falls behind her is the subject of Pale Sanctuary. There is no dreaminess in her face. Instead, it is watchful. The same feeling exists in The Oracle in Blue Lace, where a young woman stands with pigeons circling above her. The subject meets something just beyond the edge of the canvas with her gaze. Manukyan describes this phenomenon in her artist statement as “tender vigilance” – the feeling that stillness can protect, and that paying attention can also be a type of care. Of The Pearl-Bearer’s Vigil, she notes that “restraint, silence, and inwardness became the true subject.” Birds appear throughout the exhibition. “They function less as symbols and more as silent witnesses,” Manukyan explains, “reinforcing the sense that each figure exists within a larger, watchful, and interconnected interior cosmos.” The paintings vary in size from 30 by 24 inches to 14 by 11 inches. Most are oil on Belgian linen and are mounted on aluminum panels. Doves are common. Porcelain in a blue and white coloration are also frequent appearances. However, regardless of whether the scene takes place in winter or has warm colors, such as the pink and gold of The Hush of Petals, all have a sense of suspended breath. Manukyan was born in Armenia in 1963. She received training in fine arts at the P. Terlemezian College of Fine Arts and Design in Yerevan and moved to Los Angeles in 1990. For twenty years she worked in both fashion and graphic design. At one time, she created movie posters for films. After that, she began to paint full-time in 2012. Since that time, her paintings have been included in magazines including American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, and Beautiful Bizarre. This is Manukyan’s fourth solo exhibition at Abend Gallery. Día del Niño is a widely celebrated cultural tradition that honors children, families, and the joy of learning. Día del Niño uplifts children and bridges cultures by creating spaces where curiosity, creativity, and togetherness are at the center. Additionally, the day inspires intergenerational connection as elders pass down traditions; educators introduce children to cultural symbols, heritage, and language, and families join and strengthen community bonds. Butterfly Pavilion aspires to celebrate Día del Niño by bringing people of all ages, experiences, and cultures together. The celebration will be hosted at the invertebrate zoo, with activities and programs offered in English and Spanish, where everyone is invited to learn, play, and connect with their child-like awe. The holiday acts as a bridge in multicultural communities through centering children and recognizing them not only as future culture-bearers but also as the vitality of many communities. Families can collectively participate in event festivities inspired by cultural traditions and new learning opportunities to exchange cultures, promote inclusion, and encounter invertebrates up close. “Día del Niño Celebration Day is supported by the Innovation and Collaboration Grant from The Collaborative of the SCFD—a nonprofit membership organization comprised of SCFD-funded arts, culture, and science nonprofits.
